Daudet wrote in powerful, unflinching images about his excruciating symptoms, his fears, his desperate attempts at treatment, and the effects of the morphine he came to depend on.
Alphonse Daudet was born on May 13, in Nimes, France.
His father, Vincent Daudet, was a silk manufacturer who had to sell his factory and move to Lyon in Never fully recovering from the depression which followed the Revolution of , the Daudets finally lost everything in and Alphonse had to give up his hopes of matriculating. The revolution of reduced his family to near poverty, and to complete his education, young Daudet was obliged to serve as a study master in a school at Alais in southern France. Daudet spent the winter of — in Algeria.
